Want Long Term Weight Loss? Then Try To Live Healthier.

Updated: Apr 9

Sounds crazy right? If all you do is try to lose weight you could be setting yourself up for long-term disaster. Now, this does not mean you shouldn't have a weight loss goal or objective. You still need to have a clear vision or path on what you're doing and why. But if all you do is focus on the scale and check it every morning and night, then you could be producing destructive habits and behaviors.

Weight encompasses water, muscle, fat, bones, skin, food, etc. Some days you eat more, some days you eat less. Some days you're stressed, some days you're not. Some days you drink more water and some days you don't. Weight will go up and down like a wave in an ocean

So what should you do? Focus on being healthy. If you focus on making healthy decisions then weight loss happens as a consequence of those decisions. Likewise, if you make unhealthy choices then you will start to pack on the pounds.

What are healthy decisions? These can include choosing to walk to a location rather then drive, choosing gluten-free food when the option is viable, playing a sport instead of playing videogames, choosing to cook a meal at home instead of going out to eat, reading a book instead of staying up late and watching television, doing resistance training instead of prolonged cardio, etc.

These small decisions will all add up to create a healthier version of yourself. Without even focusing on losing weight, you will actually begin to lose weight. You will also build muscle, lose body fat, become stronger and decrease inflammation. And not only will you lose weight but you will have created better habits that you will carry with you for a life time.

What would unhealthy decisions be? I consider things like smoking, vaping, drinking alcohol, eating processed foods, staying up too late, staring at screens too often, being around people that drain you of energy or drive negative energy, etc. to be unhealthy. All these unhealthy decisions will eventually result in weight gain because they are destructive to the body's natural harmony and balance. These activities will drive stress, increase cortisol, make fat loss difficult, make muscle growth harder, make you more tired and slow down your metabolic rate. And the thing is that it's not that you actually had the goal of gaining weight in these situations- it's simply just the result of making too many unhealthy decisions.

Surround yourself with like-minded people that share in your goal, go to bed on time, choose the healthier food option and I guarantee that you will eventually get the body you want.

If all you do is focus on weight, and you constantly weigh yourself every morning and become too engulfed in the outcome, you probably will lose weight, for a little while. Eventually you you will gain it all back and more as soon as you stop the diet or regiment you were on.

In conclusion, put all your energy and effort into making healthy decisions and choices. In other words, focus on the journey, not the destination. I guarantee that you will not only lose fat and weight, but you'll be able to keep it off for good.
